Star march on

3:53pm Wednesday 28th November 2001

Star booked their place in the quarter-finals of the Herts Centenary Trophy on Saturday with a fine 5-2 win at St Albans side St Peters.

This was the third win in a row for Star, but it started in familiar fashion, when they fell a goal behind after ten minutes, also for the third week running.

Davis' goalkick found the feet of a St Peters forward, and he returned a 30-yard shot that sailed over the retreating keeper's head to put St Peters 1-0 up.

This woke Star up. After 20 minutes, good work by Luke Reid set up Ian Cooper, who finished in style to level the score at 1-1.

After 30 minutes Star began playing the better football, and kept St Peters on the back foot. Ben Taylor's through-ball found Cooper one-on-one with the goalkeeper. As he rounded the keeper he was brought down just outside the area.

The keeper was lucky just to be cautioned, but justice was done when Danny Plumb took the resulting free kick, and his shot found the corner of the net, giving Star the lead.

Just before half-time the lively front two of Star, Cooper and Adam Bell, got their rewards when Bell ran onto Cooper's pass to slot past the keeper, making in 1-3 to Star at half time.

Star were not focused at the start of the second half, and mistakes from Wicks and then Plumb allowed St Peters to pull a goal back.

Star found themselves under pressure, but Davis was hardly troubled in goal due to solid defending from McKinnie, Bernstein and Day.

Matt Lennon then latched onto a Wicks ball, and with 15 minutes to go he missed with his first shot but then scored on the rebound, making the score 2-4. Davis' goal kick then found Cooper with one defender to beat, and he slotted home to make the final score 2-5 to Star.

Star will play away to Tring in the quarter-finals.

STAR: Davis, McKinnie, Plumb, Day, Bernstein, Wicks, Taylor, Reid, Lennon, Bell, Cooper.
