Saturday was a momentous day for Bromley Football Club. Not only did they draw 1-1 at high-flying Ford United in agame they deserved to win, but the point enabled the Lillywhites to climb out of the bottom three of the Ryman League Division One for the first time this season.
On a gluepot of a pitch the match was only given the go-ahead less than an hour before kick-off after a lengthy pitch inspection Bromley adapted the better to the heavy conditions.
But it took a timely tackle by Mark Harris denied Chris Rose from scoring in Ford's first real attack, while at the other end Carl Bartley's goal-bound shot was deflected for a corner.
Harris then ought to have given Bromley the lead just before the interval when John Myatt's free-kick found him unmarked, but he headed over the crossbar.
After the break Bromley went straight on the offensive and were very unlucky not to score twice in as many minutes with two efforts which hit the woodwork.
And it was against the run of play when Ford, who had won their five previous games, took the lead midway through the half when Danny Benstock drove a fine 30-yard shot into the top corner via the inside of the post.
Bromley, however, were not downhearted and they equalised eight minutes later, when Bartley found himself unmarked in the box to finmish of the good approach work by Gary Drewett and Gavin McGowan.
Bromley were then denied what looked valid penalty when George Gibson was bundled over in the box, and the match finished with Bromley well on top and the Ford goal was lucky to survive on at least half-a-dozen times in the closing minutes.
