WITH the likes of Reading and Leeds on the horizon, and Glastonbury ending just a couple of weeks ago, it is clear that festival season is well and truly underway, writes Ellie Mullen.

Now, I will admit that the word ‘festivals’ is not the first I think of when someone mentions Dorset.

However, after a bit of research, I have come to the conclusion that the county actually offers a whole range of events for those hungry for the festival experience this summer.

So, instead of shelling out a small fortune for festivals miles away, head a little closer to home, and enjoy a host of events right at your doorstep for a fraction of the price. First, we have the big ones, festivals known throughout the country, and for good reason!

Larmer Tree festival, pictured right, from July 16 through to July 20, is the original boutique festival and boasts a unique blend of music from more than 70 international, national and regional bands.

Alongside this, another gem in Dorset is the well known Camp Bestival. Winning awards such as Best Family Festival in the UK in 2010, headliners include Basement Jaxx and Laura Mvula, and the event is set in the stunning grounds of Lulworth Castle from July 31 to August 3.

End your summer with a bang, get to End of the Road Festival from August 29 to 31.

Now, if a big festival with a price tag to match isn’t really your thing, Dorset offers a range of smaller events.

On July 19 you can head to Portland for Jurassic Rocks musical festival. With music across two stages, the second showcasing mainly new and upcoming local bands.

Forever Sun music festival is coming to Dorchester from July 25 to 27, where you can enjoy original music and unique performances whilst lazing in the fields of sunny Dorset – with free camping and sensible tickets prices. Finally, for the less hardcore festival-goers among us, yet who still enjoys a spot of music on a sunny day, as always Dorchester Borough Gardens holds many events. Grab a picnic and enjoy the likes of Swingtime in the Gardens on July 13, Tom Alford Band on July 27 and the One World festival on August 9.

Whatever your tastes, Dorset has something to offer you for a summer full of festivals without having to step outside the county!
