STUDENTS from Weymouth College raised more than £1,500 for the Teenage Cancer Trust after hosting two charity events.

Milena Benedetto, Bronwyn Snaith, Ellie Powell and Kate Vickers officially presented a cheque for £1,510 to Beth Bartlem of the Teenage Cancer Trust at Weymouth Pavilion last Friday, as well as making a further donation of £350 to Weymouth Pavilion.

The students, who all study travel and tourism, raised the money by hosting an afternoon of bingo and an evening talent show featuring local acts. Both were hosted at the pavilion, and the events formed part of the students’ coursework.

Beth Bartlam, region fundraiser for the teenage cancer trust, said: “It is amazing to get this money. The students have done incredibly well with their fundraising and this cheque will help TCT to provide an entire day of services for young people with cancer in the region.”

In order to satisfy the assessment criteria, students were responsible for every aspect of the event, such as deciding the format to arranging the venue and equipment.

Janine Hodson, lecturer of travel and tourism at the college, said: “This event comprised a major element of coursework. Every student had a role to play to ensure the day was a success and, as a result of that hard work, they were able to donate a significant amount to their chosen charity.”

Julie Storey, events manager at Weymouth Pavilion, helped the students organise the events and will use the £350 given to Weymouth Pavilion to invest in new outdoor seating for the venue.

She said: “We are very grateful to the students for their generosity and it was wonderful to be able to support them through the entire process of staging the events.

“We felt the Teenage Cancer Trust cause was so good that we reduced the amount offered to us to help the trust even more.”
