A RUSSIAN helicopter unit based in Syria was destroyed in a possible Islamic State attack, according to satellite images.

The attack on May 14 fell upon an important airbase in central Syria used by Russian forces.

The new satellite images suggest as many as four helicopters and 20 lorries were wiped out in a series of fires inside the base.

It was originally thought that the destruction was caused by an accidental fire after the Russian military denied that it lost helicopters at the base as a result of an attack.

The Islamic State group, however, has claimed that its supporters are responsible for the attack.

Military analyst, Sim Tack, stated: “What the imagery tells us is that first of all this was not an accidental explosion, as some of the rumours kept saying.

“It shows very clearly that there are several different sources of explosions across the airport, and it shows that the Russians took a quite a bad hit.”

Although there have been no major incidents in Europe regarding terrorism in the past month, events like these still remind us that the war on terror is still going on, no matter what country the attacks are happening in.

This is an ongoing fight and will continue to progress for the foreseeable future.

The recent terror threats have been a reason for Europe to come together and unite against IS.
