FORTUNESWELL, on Portland, is having its roads covered in litter, leaving residents concerned.

As reported in the Echo, thanks to seagulls ripping bin bags apart, litter has been seen spread across roads in the area, including rotting food and packaging.

Dorset Waste Partnership has been informed by councillors that waste services need to be improved, however when residents are given ‘seagull-proof’ bin bags, it is also up to them to help the situation.

Residents also have to comply with the rules in order for DWP to run a manageable and satisfactory service.

A DWP spokesman said: “We would like to remind residents that rubbish should only be put out for collection in the correct containers as authorised by DWP. Side waste, such as black bags of rubbish left next to bins, will not be collected by our crews.”

Seagulls have been a long-term enemy to residents and business owners in Weymouth and Portland for years.

Often in the morning, litter could be seen spread across pavements along the Esplanade.

However, this is not much of a regular sight anymore thanks to the compliance with the use of reinforced bin bags.

It is disappointing to see litter covering areas outside people’s homes, and it also gives visitors bad first impressions.

But with hopeful improvements to waste management, areas such as Fortuneswell will not be left looking like a dump.
