Shire Hall, which is a Grade 1 listed building, has secured a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund of £1.5 million that West Dorset District Council has match-funded.
The building will be restored to its glorious past, becoming home to a programme named Journey to Justice, which will bring history to life while educating future generations about events that took place there.
A new charity, the Shire Hall Trust, has been formed to run the heritage centre once it opens. Dorset Youth Council Enables (DYCE) met with Anne, the learning manager at Shire Hall, who told us about the plans for the building, and asked us for opinions on events to take place next year.
These exhibitions, projects and activities will aim to educate everyone, in a unique way, about the injustices that happened there and all over the world.
The restoration involves preserving everything so it’s as close as possible to how it would have been back then, which will complement its fantastic architecture. Look out for the grand re-opening of Shire Hall in spring 2018.
