The release of helium balloons and sky lanterns could soon be banned on council property following advice from environmental experts.

The suggestion for the ban was put to West Dorset District Council by Cllr Dave Rickard, a former marine biologist, who gave a speech about the damaging effects these items have on wildlife and the environment at a recent council meeting.

The ban would mean the use of both lanterns and helium balloons would not be permitted on either councilowned property or at events licensed by the council.

It comes as part of a national campaign to stop the use of helium balloons and lanterns, which has been backed by the Marine Life Institute, as they can have deadly effects.

I believe this ban could help in the battle against the problem. It could encourage other councils and establishments to follow suit.

The use of lanterns is a big problem; it can go very wrong and have awful consequences. This change would not only educate people on the dangers of using helium balloons and lanterns but also send a message out, demonstrating that we are taking these problems seriously.
