There is still vehement debate about bringing back the fairy lights to Weymouth seafront and getting rid of the lasers that are currently there, writes Arthur Greenhalf.

Seeing as there’s a Facebook page calling for the return of the fairy lights with more than 1,500 members and a total lack of any such support for the lasers – pretentiously coined the ‘Veils of Light’– I think it’s plain to see which way public opinion is swinging.

About £200,000 of government money has been put towards a new lighting scheme (and possibly uprooting the lasers) and £50,000 could be spent consultants to advise the best course of action.

I think that the idea is totally ridiculous. We don’t need to consult; the existence of Art Asylum and the wealth of budding artists in Weymouth suggests very strongly to me that the council would be fools not to make use of local artists.

Perhaps they could involve a group of art students from local schools and get their input and ideas.

Comments have been made about the fairy lights looking out of date – if you want fresh ideas, where better to look than a school?
