THE staff who support the two councils are employed by Weymouth and Portland Borough Council – not West Dorset District Council. The two councils still operate separately – but use the same staff.
It is not a takeover as implied by M Hooper-Immins.
Unitary may well be the answer but that is a matter for central government to review – not something our two district councils can instigate. But they could decide to share staff to save money.
County is responsible for different services (education, roads etc) while the two districts undertake planning, refuse collection etc. Limited duplication but common services such as administration and human resources could merge. Possible danger: A unitary authority covering all Dorset (ex Bournemouth and Poole) might be a little cumbersome at first.
Relocating staff from Weymouth to West Dorset (Chickerell and Dorchester) should save costs and monies from the sale of the site.
If not services would have to be cut. Is this a lesser of two evils?
