With reference to the Looking Back photos published on Tuesday April 8, I believe they have raised relevant questions to the time we now live in.

Looking at the photo of The Esplanade it demonstrates that it was much higher than the beach level. Look at the height of the wall leading to the Ritz theatre and the level of the beach.

Forward a hundred years and compare the beach level to The Esplanade now. Even in the Seventies the wall height, I think, was a good five feet above the beach. Nowadays anyone can near enough step down from The Esplanade on to the beach.

The question is: was the council partly accountable for this to happen by the infilling/extending of the area behind the Pavilion theatre? And to the owners of the properties (of which proportion the council/taxpayer own) and businesses along The Esplanade should we/they not be questioning the council as to why the beach level has been allowed to creep upwards, increasing the flood risk from the stormy seas which we had during the winter.
