I have lived next to one of Weymouth’s primary schools for the past 15 years and fully understand the compromises and problems that come with living in this location, but some things never cease to amaze me even after all this time.

Day after day parents jostle for the closest parking spaces possible to the school gates, blocking driveways, garage en-trances and parking on pave-ments.

Are they elderly or disabled? No, just mums and dads in a hurry. Along comes a parking attendant and improvements are noted, except do they move them from the pavement? No, apparently this is not in their jurisdiction but is the respons-ibility of the police. But not according to the police officer I spoke to.

So there you have it – if you’re stuck for a parking space in Weymouth, park on a pavement, if no one has been given a parking ticket outside the school in the 15 years I have lived here for parking on a pavement, your odds for not getting a ticket look good.

And for those parents who consistently park like this – you know who you are – your total disregard for other people and indeed their safety is shameful.

Let’s hope your children don’t follow by example.
