It is no surprise that the Weymouth Park and Ride is under-used and is costing a fortune.

I raised my concerns with Dorset County Council four years ago when I expressed doubt about the viability of the Weymouth Transport Package's Park and Ride scheme.

I predicted it would be under used.

I said "Looking into schemes throughout the South West in the 1980s-1990s we found very few that really worked efficiently.

Most were very costly to operate. Those most effective were where little or no parking was available in the destinations.

The response then was: “The revenue costs that have been set aside are £100k per year for the next three years but the intention is that this will become self financing from the profits made by on street car parking within Weymouth and Portland".

Well, that was wishful thinking, so I replied: "I am surprised that DCC is banking on profits from on-street parking in Weymouth and Portland to support the Park and Ride scheme.

I am advised that there is little if any such profit, and even negative revenue."

Sadly it joins the trail of failed P&R schemes across the country.
