I always thought business was about supply and demand, or should I say, where there is a demand someone should have the initiative to offer a supply.
However this does not seem to be the case in Weymouth.
In the past two months two restaurants have closed (Cafelicious & Bella Italia), presumably because there has not been the demand, especially as there are over 200 such outlets in the town.
So it's somewhat baffling to see planning permission for the old Post Office to be made into two restaurants. With eating places opening and closing like musical chairs, that end of St Thomas Street does not need more late night revellers disturbing the residents.
But there must have been an explosion of shortsighted people in the town, otherwise why would another opticians (New Boots Store) be required?
All these oversubscribed businesses are trying to survive by taking market share from similar traders and, seeing how businesses open and close on such a regular basis, this proves that stealing market share is not the route to a prosperous business.
