I wonder if other people received a letter from the council with an update of how we register to vote.

The letter is another example of bureaucracy not proof reading their sent mail. We are told that there are now two registers – an open and electoral register.

At the beginning the letter states that our details are not on the open register, a list which marketing companies may purchase to send us literature in the post. But further down the letter it states very clearly that “Your name and address will be included in the open register unless you ask for them to be removed”.

So, I go from being relaxed to quite concerned. I do not want unsolicited mail, but am I or am I not automatically on the open register? Unfortunately I had to make a phone call to the advertised 0800 number to answer the puzzle.

The answer, folks, is that one has to opt in for inclusion on the open register but really, are letters not checked for content before despatch?
