A BIG thank you for everything everyone did to make the WW1 commemoration event in the Corn Exchange such a huge success and an enjoyable event for everyone who attended and we hope that everyone who visited found it informative, interesting and enjoyable.

Without the members of the organising committee this just would have never happened.

The huge number of volunteers who ‘fetched and carried’, telephoned, designed, printed, baked cakes and made stew, set up displays, hung flags, searched for items, begged and borrowed, made tea and coffee, dressed up in warm clothes on a hot day, lent us the same clothes, learnt the songs and sang the songs as part of the ‘flash mob’, answered questions, gave presentations, built a sandbag wall from hand made by Bradfords sandbags, on seeing the wall decided we just had to have a Vickers machine gun!, guided walks, made trench art, played music, took films and recorded for posterity, relayed the event via hospital radio to interested people unable to attend, who made the recording of an oral history and the mayor who wore his robes all day in the heat giving the whole event the sense of occasion that it certainly was.

Last but not least Brian Bates who had the original idea. I expect he didn’t realise how much work he would have to do !

We do hope those of you who attended found it worthwhile.

This event was part of four years of commemorative events in Dorchester, working in partnership with many organisations who wish to do so and if you have an idea you would like to stage please contact us if we can help in any way.
