Are people aware that Weymouth and Portland Borough Council are planning to sell of the Greenhill chalets, loosing revenue from 95 chalets rented at over a £1000 a year!

According to the council they are all rented, with a waiting list. Why are so many not used?

Do people actually pay rent but don’t use them? Where has the money gone over the years?

Apart from a quick coat of paint (so that they looked the part for the Olympics) nothing has been done for the past ten years. If the rent paid over the years had been used to maintain them they would not be in such a state now.

They are Grade II listed, have been there for approx 100 years and are under a covenant that states the area is for communal use.

The council state they can no longer afford their upkeep, and believe they can sell them and the surrounding area to a private developer for approximately £3 million.

This is not the first time they have tried to sell off the area. In previous years we have been allowed to continue to rent but this year we have been asked to vacate them by October 31 2014.

They will then be locked up and left empty with not only loss of revenue to the council, but very quickly they will be subjected to vandalism and become another eyesore for Weymouth.

Visitors use this route from Preston and the Bus/Coach Park at Lodmoor along Greenhill into the town centre.

How can the borough council justify leaving this eyesore along our coastline when they are always on about enhancing Weymouth’s heritage and making the town more attractive?

They are an integral aspect of the Weymouth seafront and the Jurassic Coast A committee of some very dedicated tenants have submitted a business plan to the council working extremely hard to persuade them not to go ahead with this plan but to let the people who use the chalets to continue to do so and take over the running of them so that Weymouth can keep this part of it’s heritage and history.

Surely these chalets, only available to local residents, deserve more consideration when Weymouth is crumbling around us from every side.
