Two new councillors have just been elected to Portland Town Council.

It is an appropriate time to reply to Gareth Duncan’s letter (Have Your Say: Monday, August 11.) His assertion that I wasn’t threatened at the January meeting is untrue.

Most people on Portland know that one of the Facebook anti-precept rise campaigners sat a metre in front of me and whispered: “We’re going to get you” whilst simultaneously making as if to slit my throat.

This was witnessed by both councillors Ray Novak and Tim Munro.

The meeting had been whipped up into a fury by the Facebook campaign, so much so that my daring to point out that Portland had one of the lowest precepts in Britain was drowned out, along with Cllr Rod Wild's powerpoint presentation attempting to explain the thinking behind the proposed precept rise.

The Facebook apology for the preposterous allegation that I’d stolen a bottle of spirits from an Easton outlet was too late and therefore meaningless.

This allegation had already gone viral, so much so that a journalist from the Dorset Echo quizzed me about it on my arrival back from Scotland and a story followed.

Respect has to be mutual wherever it pertains Gareth.

My casual dress at a D-Day service is not for anyone to judge. The fact that I was there honouring those who fell is the important point.

My uncle fought in North Africa, my grandfather got gassed in the trenches and my mother nursed in China. I won’t be lectured by those who are ignorant of the sacrifices my family have made.

Why should have I resigned?

Stuart Cave has done a brilliant job promoting the island as town crier and I fought hard to ensure that Portland Town Council agreed to the minimal expense of having one.

I was additionally an active member of the group that brought the Island caretaker to fruition. I’m proud of my contribution to Portland’s recent life.
