On Saturday I waited on Dorchester Road with two children for another annual parade.

I was left aghast by the speed of most of the bikes. The first few came through appearing to be within the speed limit.

These were followed by the majority of bikes clearly significantly breaking the speed limit. Bikes were travelling at over 40mph, with marshalls overtaking these bikes at what I would judge as being over 50mph in a 30mph zone.

This was for a sustained period with the majority of bikes involved driving through Broadwey and Redlands and included overtaking of other motor vehicles. Even the support van at the rear must have been at 50mph.

If the excuse was that they were catching up, then the marshalls need to learn to slow the front down, not vice versa.

Does this parade have an exemption from speed limits? Do the marshalls need marshalling?

Do these Harley riders have better training than other road users?

We’ve always loved watching this parade, and certainly wouldn’t want it stopped, but with so many bike-related tragedies in the area in recent years, let’s at least try to keep it safe for everybody.
