Despite the endeavours and pleas of many local residents, including myself, it is now abundantly clear that the Highways Department has no interest at all in the implementation of some basic remedial work at what must be two of the most hazardous and chilling areas in the town (ASDA junction apart, that is a very different and complex problem).

The first area of concern is the junction at the top of King Street, which is controlled by traffic lights.

To the ingenuous pedestrian this junction has all the characteristics of being a safe place to cross.

However, this is not the case because the traffic light system makes no allowance for the safe passage of pedestrians: it was never designed for this purpose.

The answer of course is to re-establish the safety railing on both sides of King Street thus forcing pedestrians to look behind them and see the safe route afforded by the subway.

When I finally contacted the Highways Department I received the same reply as one of your previous correspondents to the effect that it is up to people to decide where and when they want to cross any road.

Try repeating this nonsense to the relatives of those who have lost their loved ones whilst crossing one of our roads, or try telling this to the elderly couple recently crossing King Street who quite literally froze in abject terror as a car approached them.

I know because it was my car, and I was the driver.

The second area of concern is, once again, the section of recently established cycle path which rises to at least a one in four gradient.

There is no safety barrier or screening at the bottom to prevent a possible serious accident occurring at some time. When I contacted the Highways Department about this issue their response was that it is up to people to be careful.

Surely it is the responsibility of the council to make our roads as safe as possible: they most certainly have a duty of care.

Anyway, enough is enough.

I have recently written to The Secretary of State for Transport to seek his help.
