The news that an independent safety and operational survey of Weymouth’s traffic situation, by Traffic Management Systems of Warwick is to be carried out is not before time.

The so-called ‘intelligent’ new system has been an absolute disaster for traffic management routes throughout the entire borough.

Councillor James may be the transport spokesman, but she appears to concentrate her remarks on the Boot Hill fiasco.

No mention is made con-cerning King Street and the dangerous pedestrian situation in Westham Road, where the public at large has to cross dodging between traffic, including buses at the junction leading onto the Esplanade, there being no pedestrian crossing.

The idea was to force all traffic to join the Esplanade using Westham Road, because the original ability of traffic to join the Esplanade from King Street was destroyed by the con-struction of the pedestrian islands and crossing in the wrong place. The current crossing does not connect with the under road tunnel which results in the public dodging between vehicles and traffic lights.

If the pedestrian crossing linking the King Street area to the Esplanade was moved 50 yards to a position opposite the amusement shop and the memorial, the original traffic island could be reinstalled, thus allowing all traffic to turn right onto the Esplanade and free up Westham Road for traffic and pedestrians.

This site has never worked well since the original tunnel construction in 1988.

Councillor Eric Webb and myself had a site meeting with the DCC road surveyor who responded to our concern by telling us that he knew it would work because his computer said so. Perhaps the Boot Hill fiasco emanated from the same computer?
