After what seems like months of publicity, the anticipation is over.

The new and improved Waste Disposal collection service for Weymouth and Portland is now operational.

Once the finer points have been addressed, such as squeezing air out of plastic milk containers and replacing the cap and washing out yoghurt pots, we seem to be on a winner.

No longer will recycling items be blown out of the green tubs as they are secure in bins with lids.

For us, today was recycling and food day. Any piece of rubbish that happened to drop to the ground was picked up. I even saw a collector with a handful of bits and pieces that he had spotted on the ground.

The food collecting duo also went to great lengths to ensure scraps were not left for birds/vermin.

All in all, from my observations, they and the system are working well.

However, what has to be addressed, and I’m not sure how it will be, is the fact that an empty food caddy is light and can be easily blown away.

This makes me wonder how many people returned home to find their caddy gone or smashed.

No doubt an easy answer is for the caddy to be placed within the garden (if possible) perimeter; then at least it will remain with it’s rightful owner.
