Lee Dalton raised some important points in his letter ‘Protecting our sea’ (Letters, November 18). I can assure him that the UK Independence Party have not only recognised his concerns but have produced a range of policies that will not only provide a living for our fishermen but will also see improved control over our fish stocks.

The problem, as most UK fishermen know, is that the EU’s Common Fisheries Policy applies equally to fishermen from the Hebrides as they do to Greek tuna fishermen – such a range of fishing practices and types of fish being caught just doesn’t work.

In brief, UKIP will reclaim our territorial fishing waters, restore our fishing fleet and introduce sustainable fishing practices.

How can we do this? By withdrawing from the Common Fisheries Policy and stopping EU control over our fishing grounds and fish stocks.

Amongst the detail, we will introduce a 12-mile limit open to UK fishermen only and a 200-mile exclusive Economic Zone under UK control. We will have fishery protected areas with no energy/aggregate exploitation and there will be voluntary closure areas and no-trawl zones to protect shellfish grounds.

We will stop foreign vessels claiming ‘historical’ rights to fish our inshore waters and any fish caught by foreign ships within the expanded UK Waters (under licence) will have to be landed at a UK port.
