In response to Cllr Penny McCartney’s letter for Shelter taking on bad landlords, I sincerely hope they achieve their goals.
But on the flip side, what about the good landlords out there with tenants owing rents who have no alternative but to throw them out? That can take time – two months usually – which means another two months’ rent not paid.
To take each tenant to court can end up costing the landlord up to £780 and, as only one in four cases actually succeeds if you have more than one tenant owing money, this can leave landlords seriously out of pocket.
And even if you are lucky the tenant only has to pay a few pounds a month and rarely keeps it up for long, which means going back to court – more court fees.
The government is talking about stopping housing benefit payments being paid to directly landlords. Good luck with that because I suspect there will be an awful lot more people made homeless if they go ahead with it.
Shelter will really have its hands full then.
