It’s interesting to see that Weymouth and Portland Borough Council is still saying that the whole area around Castle Cove Beach needs to be stabilised before the footpath can be repaired (Echo, November 25).

The Friends of Castle Cove Beach have submitted successive Freedom of Information requests to both the Borough and County Councils – none have yielded any scientific reports justifying this statement.

The only figures we have seen have been rough estimates based on a scheme in Lyme Regis.

The footpath is one-metre wide and disrupted only at the last fifteen metres.

The rough estimate refers to a plan to stabilise 175 metres to shore up three houses and Old Castle Road – an enormous area, of which the footpath is a tiny part.

The only on-site inspection that produced costs to restore the steps was reported at the WPBC meeting on June 5, 2014 – £25,000, plus £5,000 contingency.

The Friends of Castle Cove will be holding a meeting at St Nicholas Church Hall, Buxton Road, on Wednesday, December 10, from 7 to 9pm.

As with all our events, it will be a family-friendly occasion, with a Treasure Hunt, the results of our logo competition, and local photos and statements about our Beach.

There will also be a presentation about the beach, and a short AGM.

All are welcome to attend.
