It has always been my understanding that whether it’s a churchyard or cemetery where people are buried, the ground is consecrated, as performed by a bishop. That being so, irrespective of how long that ground has been consecrated and the body lain beneath, it is still a place that should be respected.
On Saturday in Weymouth, something didn’t rest easy with me when I saw the two reindeer on consecrated ground at St Mary’s Church munching away – peeing and pooing no doubt – a stone’s throw from headstones that had been moved to allow for the grass to be mown.
Yes it was nice for the children. Yes the reindeer were with their keepers and yes the area was made to look attractive. But were family members of mine buried there, no matter how long they’d been there, I just might have found it uncomfortable.
Hopefully someone will take the time to reassure me that I’ve got my facts wrong.
