READING the Echo of Wednesday August 5, I came across the article on the dedication of the Kohima memorial at County Hall in Dorchester.

Some years ago a John Winton wrote a book about the forgotten fleet – this referred to the British Pacific fleet from July 1944 to September 1945.

The last time I remember this armada of 100 ships being remembered in Weymouth was an evening entitled British Pacific fleet night in 1985, and was held at the Wellington Arms in support of the charity Mencap. It included a reminiscence by an eye witness of the attack on HMS Howe by Kamikaze aircraft during the operations off of Okinawa (this ship became a battleship training ship at Portland, one of a squadron of four from 1946 – 1951) all these served with the BPF under SEAC (South East Asia Command headed by Lord Louis Mountbatten).

Let's not forget all of those forces that helped the Americans achieve victory over Japan, August 15 this year being the anniversary. Weymouth and Portland, what are you doing to mark this occasion??
