MARY Duane (Letters, 10 Dec) suggests to Oliver Letwin that he “come and join the majority of his constituents in the real world”, in the context of cuts to public services.

Given that Mr Letwin won his seat in 2015 with an absolute majority, perhaps it is Ms Duane who needs to come and join the majority of Dorset West voters in the real world?

They, like Mr Letwin and his party, realise that a nation can’t continue to spend £5 for every £4 it earns, and more importantly that the solution is not only to increase taxes, as that would ultimately be counterproductive.

Perhaps Ms Duane might like to stand for local election on a ticket of greatly increased council spending on the services she lists — with a commensurate rise in Council Tax — and see how much she has in common with the electorate?
