TRADERS are right to be angry (Dorset Echo, March 30) about motorists ignoring traffic regulations which are supposed to bar them from entering the bottom end of South Street in Dorchester from 9.30am to 4.30pm.
They are rightly concerned regarding pedestrian safety as the bollards in New Street which stopped traffic from entering the road are no longer being raised.
The Echo published a letter from me last November which pointed out that thousands of shoppers had become used to walking on the road in the lower end of South Street.
They felt safe in what was a pedestrianised zone without fear of being hit by a vehicle, motorcyclist or cyclist.
Not so now.
At that time the Dorset County Council had decided “for the time being” that it would not be raising the bollards; they would rely instead on “signage and enforcement”.
The protest from the traders shows that such a policy has obviously not worked.
Time for the County Council to sort out this dilemma — and soon.
Too late when someone is injured or even killed.
