WE WELCOME the news, reported in he Echo, that the Government is to advise Dorset County Council next week that the elections due to take place next May should go ahead.

As Robert Gould so correctly comments, because no decisions have yet been made regarding the future shape of councils in Dorset they cannot pre-determine a decision by cancelling elec- tions.

There is no cause for “dismay”.

Robert Gould’s comments were both measured and objective, and gave no indication of the need for any.

Further more, the £800k election budget referred to is not “extra cost”.

As the 2017 elections have been scheduled all along their cost has been planned for some time.

If there is an extra cost it will be incurred by changing the council, a cost that will have to be balanced against any savings made by the changes.

This is good news for democracy, to uphold people’s right to choose their local government and should be celebrated as such.
