REFERRING to the official decision to abandon the idea of the socalled Western Route (Echo, Dec 12) Councillor James Farquharson says:, “There’s far too much traffic going past Asda and up Boot Hill.”

Yes indeed! But he must have seen the decision coming, not least because the benefit-to-cost ratio is far below what the Department of Transport demands.

His comment is clearly nothing more than a crass attempt to shrug off immediate responsibility for tackling the serious problem of traffic on Boot Hill.

The Western Route would have made little difference to this, because people who use Boot Hill regularly could simply not be expected to drive miles out of their way via Chickerell.

The abandonment of the Western Route does not absolve Cllr Farquharson and the rest of the borough council of responsibly for fixing Boot Hill.

We need enlightened thinking, not glib remarks.
