ALTHOUGH I fully support the proposal to have two unitary authorities for Dorset, on the basis that it will save a large amount of money, I am very much against the idea for a Weymouth Town Council.

Such a council will simply replace the existing borough council and will still require offices, employees and, of course, councillors, who are all paid and claim allowances and expenses.

So where is the saving?

The whole idea of a unitary authority is that it is responsible for ALL local government services within its boundary, whereas it is a well known fact that town and parish councils have little or no powers.

The claim that Weymouth will lose its identity is rubbish.

Weymouth will always be Weymouth and is already represented on the county council.

There is nothing to stop Weymouth having an honorary mayor, the term honorary meaning unpaid.

I am all for local government but in the 21st century we do not need all these minor councils, each building their own little empire.

It seems to me that the idea for a Weymouth Town Council only has two objectives, firstly to enable existing borough councillors to keep their jobs and secondly to charge an additional level of council tax in order to pay for the said town council.
