FROM the comments I have read on Facebook, there appears to be much confusion regarding the new traffic lights at Great Western Cross in Dorchester.

When approaching the lights from Dorchester West station there is a no left turn sign on the lights and a temporary sign (which is usually lying on the ground) which states that there is no left turn into Damers Road. This is reiterated on the Dorset for You website.

There is no mention anywhere of a no left turn from the same road into Cornwall Road, so I assume this is permissible. However this is in effect a 90 degree turn which is what is shown on the no left turn symbol on the lights (the turn into Damers Road is about 45 degrees).

I emailed the council 10 days ago and was told I would receive an answer within five days. Needless to say I am still waiting. If local people are confused by this, how on earth are visitors going to know what to do, bearing in mind they will not even know the street names or have looked at the website.

If they assume they cannot enter Cornwall Road when wishing to head west then they will either go straight on into Great Western Road or turn right into Maumbury Road, leading to congestion in other parts of the town. If anyone from the relevant council department read this, please could you find some means of making this clearer.
