Why spend cash on Queen's golden jubilee?

I CANNOT express how pleased I was to read the letter sent by Mr Blake (Star, December 28) regarding the Queen's Jubilee celebrations.

When I first read about our mayors indignant appeal I really could not control my anger at his audacity to demand money from a public that is being fleeced at every turn.

I immediately called the number that was published, and unfortunately I could not speak to anybody, however I did leave a message telling it like it is.

When third world countries leaders fritter away public money and use the government for their own benefit we call them banana republics, so what is England then?

Euan Blair can summon the defence ministry to do his homework for him, the royal hangers on spend our money like there is no tomorrow and they use their royal status to make even more money by blatantly exploiting their positions. John two Jags Prescott flies all over the world doing what exactly?

Our council tax is going up, people are dying on trolleys in hospital corridors, our education system is the worst in Europe, we pay over the odds for everything that we buy.

Failures in every field is rewarded with golden handshakes. If I did not do my job I would be sacked not rewarded. The Dome is empty and somebody is getting paid thousands to run it? What is he doing? Making sure it really is empty?

Since September 11 the west has been spouting sanctimoniously about how wonderful the western way of life is, and democracy? What democracy when the government repeatedly ignores public opinion and does what it pleases so, and this may sound extreme ... what difference between New Labour and the Taliban? They both ignore the wishes of the public.

Mr Mayor, if you want to squander money on something totally insignificant I suggest you spend your own money, we certainly will not be celebrating.

Mr Blake, thank you very much for your letter, many of us feel the same way.
