Dick Whittington, The Exchange, Sturminster Newton
Sturminster Newton Amateur Dramatic Society lived up to audience expectations with their latest panto, Dick Whittington.
Director Helen Lacey had brought together the usual SNADS team, but led them into rather new territory here. The larger stage needed larger performances and it certainly had those. The brilliant Ian Greig as Sally the Cook had only to step on stage before he received a round of applause. Jennifer Shepard and Tessa Cox and Dick Whittington and Tommy the Cat had meaty roles and Tessa's feline footwork was delightful.
As ever, SNADS had a few surprises up their sleeves, and this year it was Aimee Hazell as Alice, the romantic interest for young Dick. Singing and acting with equal ease, Aimee really shone in the spotlight.
For every baddy, a panto demands someone really good and for this we had Toby Greenfield as King Rat and Tania White as Fairy Bowebelle. The audience cheered, booed and hissed as these two tried to outwit each other.
The enjoyment of the cast in their home was apparent and they must have taken great pleasure in the response from their audience.
