A PUMPING station in Weymouth is being transformed into an art space in a unique project to promote local talent.

Contemporary work on display at the Wessex Water-owned site in Sutton Poyntz, which includes sculpture, photography and video installations, is based around the theme of water.

The ‘hose-A’ exhibition, which opens next week, is being supported by Wessex Water’s charitable arm which supports environmental projects.

A Wessex Watermark Award cheque for £500 was presented to exhibition organisers, the South West Artwork Community Interest Company, which was set up in 2006 by Weymouth-based artists Ed Jones and Laura Mulhern.

The pair organise exhibitions in unusual places to showcase their work and the work of other artists in the region.

They put on a successful show at the pumping station last Christmas and are returning this year with established artists including Nigel Slight, David Rogers, Julie Hill and Nathan Castle.

Laura Mulhern said: “We are very excited to be awarded this Wessex Watermark Award as it enables us to not only promote the wealth of contemporary art from the South West but to base it in the historic pumping station.”

The exhibition, sponsored by Wessex Water, Waterside Holiday Park and Cartridge Zone, runs from October12-24 and is open from 10am-4pm daily.
