Hospice fundraiser, 80, to scale down her work
 |
| OVER TO YOU: Lady Spicer hands over the reins at the Joseph Weld Hospice to Sally Inchbald (S) |
WINIFRED Spicer, who played a major role in creating a hospice in Dorchester, is scaling down her work with the charity.
But she intends to continue her involvement with the Weldmar Hospicecare Trust through her new position as one of the charity's vice-presidents.
Lady Spicer has her husband - former West Dorset MP Sir James Spicer - to thank for getting involved with palliative care in the area back in the 1980s.
She said at her home in Beaminster that the hard-working MP could not devote as much time as he wanted to the good cause.
She said: "So he offered me up instead. And I would recommend it wholeheartedly to anyone thinking about getting involved.
"Now that I'm 80 I wanted to ease back from going all over the county but I intend to stay involved as a vice-president."
Lady Spicer helped with fundraising and establishing the charity that brought about the Joseph Weld Hospice in Dorchester - now part of the enlarged and renamed charity.
She formed the Friends arm of the charity and threw herself into fundraising and organising events.
She said: "It's a very charismatic charity to work for - people want to help."
She paid tribute to the charity's Caroline Nickinson, who has spearheaded fundraising and publicity. She said: "She is fantastic and she has been so supportive of me. And I know she will be for Sally Inchbald, who takes over as chairman of the friends."
Lady Spicer was appointed MBE in the New Year honours list for her charitable work in West Dorset.
