A WOMAN was injured in a two-car crash in Weymouth as freezing temperatures gripped the county.

The crash at Chafey’s Roundabout near Southill on Saturday in which a 67-year-old grandmother was injured was one of many reported in Dorset over the weekend.

Emergency services were kept busy as vehicles flipped over and skidded on icy roads.

The collision at Chafey’s Roundabout, which is believed to have been ice-related, happened on Saturday morning and involved a green Mazda 323 and a grey Honda Civic, registered to Dorset keepers.

The A354 Weymouth Way was closed as crews of firefighters used hydraulic rescue equipment to release a woman from one of the cars. She was treated by paramedics before being taken to hospital.

Inspector Caroline Naughton of Dorset Police said the force had seen an increase in collisions over the weekend.

She urged motorists and pedestrians to take extra care due to the risk of ice on roads and pavements, particular at night and early in the morning when the risk of ice is greater.

An elderly woman was rescued from her car after it overturned at Burleston Bends between Tolpuddle and Athelhampton on Saturday. Firefighters from Dorchester and Bere Regis attended as well as paramedics and police and the woman was taken to hospital by ambulance.

Also on Saturday, firefighters helped to get a man out of his car after the vehicle rolled and righted itself at Guys Marsh near Shaftesbury. The roof was cut off so the man could be released without any further injury.

And the B3081 Zig-Zag Hill in Melbury Abbas was closed for safety reasons because of ice.

A police spokesman said on Saturday: “We’ve had quite a lot of ice-related accidents, particularly north of Dorchester.

“Drivers should be careful as the weather is expected to get worse.”

Ice also caused problems for motorists yesterday as a number of roads were closed due to collisions and hazardous driving conditions. There were no reports of any serious injuries.

Radipole Lane in Weymouth was closed and traffic diverted until a gritting vehicle arrived to treat the surface. Two cars had collided before police closed it.

The A353 from Warmwell roundabout to Poxwell was closed just before 9am when another vehicle crashed and blocked the road.
