GEORGE Jewels gave high-flying Portland Town Lions a scare in the latest round of matches in the Weymouth Sunday League Championship.

The second-bottom Jewels, who are still searching for their first point, pushed the league leaders all the way at St Osmund’s School, only to suffer a narrow 4-3 defeat.

The encounter was end-to-end at the start with the Lions being pegged back twice before the break.

An own goal and a strike from Justin Faulkner accounted for Portland’s first-half goals and it was the latter that made it 3-2 early in the second half before Matt Brown added a fourth.

The George then pulled another one back in the closing stages but the Lions just managed to hold on to take all three points.

Portland boss Dave Price said: “Anyone can beat anyone on their day in this league and George Jewels will win a few games very soon – it was a relief to get the win in the end.”

Second-placed Dolphin also triumphed 5-1 against Weymouth Athletic while Moby Dick’s overcame Broadmayne 5-4 to stay third.

The other two games in the league saw Belvedere hammer Dolce Vita 5-0 and The Lounge beat Yates 3-1.

Meanwhile, in the Premiership, it was high-fives for Britannia and Rodwell as they saw off Weyline and Market House respectively.

The Brit received a 5-0 walkover against the reigning champions, who were unable to field a side, while league leaders Rodwell overcame Market House 5-2 with the Maiden Street outfit’s consolation goals coming from Bob Darch and Stuart Puckett.

Finally, it was seventh heaven for second-placed Rendezvous as they kept up the pressure on Rodwell with a 7-0 win at Alexandra.
