WEYMOUTH Sports got hit for six at unbeaten Mere Town in the Dorset Senior League.

Joint-boss Chris Hicks felt his men gave the league leaders too much respect on the day but is confident they will learn from the experience.

He told Echosport: “I have mixed feelings about the result.

“I am obviously not happy we lost and very disappointed with the manner of some of the goals we conceded but they certainly weren’t six goals better than us and I am confident we will give them a much better game at our place later in the season.

“The drive up there was horrendous and when we got there the pitch was small and the surface was dreadful.

“They then just lumped the ball from back to front from the first minute to the last and I have to say they are the first team I have played against that has done that.

“It was not good football at all and we found it very frustrating to play against.

“We also gave them too much respect early on and by the time we realised they weren’t as good as we thought they would be it was too late.”

Hicks went on to add: “Once we got to grips with it we enjoyed good spells of possession and even at 3-0 down at half-time we still had the belief that we could get back into it.

“However, we then conceded a poor fourth goal and from there it was always going to be an uphill task.

“To their credit though, the lads kept working hard, their heads never dropped and we went on to create a few chances but unfortunately nothing would go in for us.

“To lose by six in the end does not make pretty reading but we will now just put it down to a learning experience and look to move on.”

Jordan Collins bagged a hat-trick for Mere whose other goals came from Scott Martin, with a brace, and Jamie Samways.

The defeat leaves Sports in ninth place with just nine points from eight games.
