BEN Westhenry finished third in the England junior men (under-20) at the IAAF International cross-country competition in Venta de Banos, Spain.
Westhenry, a sixth-former at Thomas Hardye School, thoroughly enjoyed his first adult race for England, having competed in schools internationals and the European Youth Olympics.
The race provided good preparation for his next race, the Edinburgh International on January 5, where he has been selected to compete for Great Britain’s junior men in the annual competition against Team USA and Team Europe. S
election for both England and Great Britain was on the strength of his performance at the European trials in Liverpool in November.
Along with his trophy, Westhenry received one his strangest ever prizes, a bag of food shopping.
Cockerels also played a part in the prize-giving but the team were not able to find out why.
Highlights from the junior men and women’s races are expected to be shown in BBC1 with live coverage of the Edinburgh International.
