ELLIOT Joy has won West Bay Angling Club’s junior section’s final match of the year.

However, Keiran Ellison, who had built up a healthy lead over the series and despite blanking on this occasion, still won the overall Jurassic League Trophy comfortably.

The Jurassic League takes place after the main Saturday Junior series and is fished during the months of November and December.

The match took place, as usual, on the East Pier at West Bay between noon and 3pm and despite more bad weather predictions, eight brave souls turned up to fish.

As it turned out, the heavy rain did ease off for the first half of the match with only light rain occurring during the second.

Competitors found sea conditions difficult as the overnight rain had caused the river to spate with the result of the sea turning chocolate brown with fresh floodwater and no shortage of debris and weed being carried through to the outer harbour and beyond.

Because of these conditions, fishing proved extremely tough with only three fish (all five-bearded rockling) being caught by two anglers.

As well as the usual prizes, the top anglers won Christmas hampers, provided by Hilary Smith, and, as there was no third place, this was drawn from a hat and the winner was Charlie Lawson.

After the match, a presentation and buffet was held at the Salthouse, West Bay.

Thirty-two competitors, family, friends and members attended the presentation and everyone enjoyed a buffet, which this year was provided by Steve and Sally from the Punch and Judy Bakery.

The event had a pirate theme and, after the buffet, the juniors lined up in their fancy dress to be judged by guest pirates Robinson Wreck from the Black Wreck Music Project and his ship-mate Pyrate Jack.

After much deliberation the best dressed pirate results were announced with Danny Cowburn taking first prize, with Tiana Foot second and Charlie Lawson third.

The presentation and prize-giving then went ahead with all who entered the last match, winning prizes collected over the year from donations.

donations for the match and league were from Punch and Judy, Hilary Smith, Richard and the late Frank Daw, Kay Guppy, Hugh Rathbone, Cliff Rooney, Gerry Reed, Pat Claydon, Roger Guppy, Dave Chidzoy, John Coombs, John and Frances Hunt and Fred Bowditch.

Junior secretary Roger Guppy said: “I would like to thank all those who have supported the junior section over the 12 months and look forward to the beginning of this year’s Saturday Juniors, which starts on April 6.

“Also thanks to Andrea Joy for all her help with kitchen duties.”
