DSL Previews: Charlie signs on at Upwey

STRIKER Charlie May could make his Upwey & Broadwey debut tomorrow as the club tries to play its Dorset Senior Trophy tie against Okeford United (1.30pm) at the sixth time of asking.

The weather forecast doesn’t look too promising this weekend and after snow and rain the Okeford pitch has come under severe pressure from the elements yet again.

However, midfielder Pete Jarvis, who is Upwey’s only absentee through injury as he awaits keyhole surgery on his groin, is glad to see May bolster his team’s options up front.

“We had three strikers at the start of the season but lost James Baker to ligament damage so Charlie will be a big addition for us,” said Jarvis.

“He was with us in pre-season and was a bit undecided whether he wanted to stick with us or go to Portland in the Dorset Premier League.

“He went with Portland and we wished him all the best but he perhaps fell out of favour there and got a bit frustrated with a lack of first-team football.

“As a player he is very quick and good at getting behind defenders. He’s got a good touch and can finish well.”

If the third-round clash doesn’t go ahead Upwey will try to arrange a friendly on the 3G pitch at Redlands but the club just want to get the Okeford game on.

Weymouth Sports are in league action tomorrow when they host table-toppers Mere Town (2pm), who are still undefeated this season after 12 games.

Sports lost 1-0 to Westland Sports last time out but although he recognises Mere as the top team in the league, Weymouth boss Chris Hicks doesn’t feel they are too easy on the eye.

“As a unit they probably are the best and their lad up front is pretty ruthless and he will score given half a chance,” said Hicks.

“They are unbeaten but I don’t think they are the best footballing side in the league.

“They go from the back to the front as quickly as possible so we’ll have to make sure we combat that and use the ball well when we have it.

“All the lads are young and keen and they try their hardest and really stick at it despite the fact we are at the wrong end of the table.

“It’s very encouraging so fingers crossed we will turn it around and start getting back up the table.”

Again, Weymouth’s clash is also in doubt due to the recent inclement weather though the side has been able to train.
