Weymouth hit Wayfarers for six
3:00pm Friday 8th February 2013 in Sport By Echo Reporter
TREBLE: Lynda Drewitt
WIMBORNE WAYFARERS 0 WEYMOUTH LADIES 6
A HAT-TRICK from Weymouth’s Lynda Drewitt set up a commanding 6-0 victory at Wimborne Wayfarers in the East Division.
Further goals from Wendy Butcher and Chloe van Crugten completed the rout, while a Wimborne own goal capped an ignominious display by the hosts.
Wimborne started aggressively, forcing the visitors into some spirited defending, but Weymouth soon took the lead against the run of play when Butcher scored from a short corner.
A brilliant interception by Bernie John set up Weymouth’s next goal, with Drewitt finishing off Emily Austin’s fine pass, before a similarly worked goal sent Weymouth into a 3-0 half-time lead.
The away side maintained their good momentum into the second half, forcing Wimborne into an own goal with some heavy pressure, before van Crugten deflected in a driven ball from Butcher for their fifth goal.
Late on, good play from Austin found Drewitt lurking in the D, and she finished off the move perfectly to claim her hat-trick and the player-of-the-match award, with Austin also registering three assists.
Weymouth Ladies now sit seventh in the East Division table on 15 points and have a two-week break ahead of their next match with just five games of the season remaining.
* Weymouth Ladies Seconds did not play last weekend but face Swanage & Wareham at Redlands Sports Hub today at 11am.
East Division: City of Bath 3 Swanage & W 0, Devizes 2 Team Bath Buccaneers III 0, Frome 4 Gillingham 0, West Wilts 4 Salisbury II 2, Wimborne 0 Weymouth 6.
