West Dorset Warriors go trophy crazy

THE annual presentation of the West Dorset Warriors Club Championships was held at the Dorchester Sports Centre, with 25 swimmers coming away with trophies.

The presentation also included those who were awarded for their improvement and effort throughout the year.

Ollie Fairman dominated the boys’ nine and 10-year-old races, collecting 10 trophies out of the 11 events he entered, together with most-improved male club swimmer for 2012.

Fairman was beaten by George Green in a tight battle in the 50m butterfly as he narrowly failed to complete a clean sweep. In the girls’ nine and ten year-old events, Erin Gowers collected six trophies across the 100m and 200m individual medley, 100m and 200m freestyle, 200m breaststroke and 100m backstroke.

Elsewhere, Phoebe Kelman-Johns performed well across the championships with several personal best times and was rewarded with trophies for 100m breaststroke and 200m backstroke and most-improved female club swimmer for 2012.

Adelaide Elson, also swimming in the nine and ten year-old events, collected a brace in 50m freestyle and butterfly, together with the award for steps swimmer for 2012, and Lucy Taton showed determination to swim 400m freestyle for the first time – collecting the trophy in the process.

In the girls’ 11-12 year-old category, Gemma Baker had her most successful club championships, achieving personal best times in most of her events and collecting nine trophies across freestyle, backstroke, butterfly and the individual medley.

Megan Young collected a hat-trick of trophies in the 200m butterfly, 400m individual medley and 800m freestyle, with Megan Clarke completing the double in 100m and 200m breaststroke together with a trophy for effort and technique throughout 2012.

Over in the boys’ 11-12 year-old events, George Kelman-Johns and William Blackledge dominated proceedings, with Kelman-Johns claiming a superb haul of seven wins and William notching five.

The girls’ 13-14 year-old events continued to attract the most competitors with Amber Cornick coming out on top with a stunning haul of ten wins.

Beth Guy won the 100m and 200m individual medley and 100m breaststroke with Flora Johnson beating Guy in a closely-fought 200m breaststroke. Three boys shared the honours in the 13-14 year-old section with Charlie Hitchcock winning eight events.

Jack Dunne won the 100m butterfly while Daniel Felton completed a year of significant improvement with wins in the 200m, 400m and 1500m freestyle and 400m individual medley.

Amie Buttle completed the set in the girls’ 15-16 year-old disciplines, whereas for the boys, competition was high and honours were shared.

Aaron Fryer won seven trophies with Luke Voss showing his strength in his specialist freestyle events, winning the 50m, 100m, 200m and 1500m freestyle.

Peter Thornton produced winning displays in the 100m individual medley and 100m butterfly with Elliott Smart victorious in the 200m backstroke.

Hayley Rooks, in her final year with the club, completed the set in girls’ over-17 events to round off a fine year during which she has been a brilliant role model as club captain.

In the boys’ 17 years and over, competition was higher than it has been for several years with both Tom Cooper and Ryan Knott winning six trophies each, while Guy Buttle collected a brace of wins in the 100m and 200m backstroke.
