Ashley’s sweeping statement

WARNING: Ashley Wells WARNING: Ashley Wells

ASHLEY Wells has thrived as a sweeper since switching from full-back but he has warned his team-mates they must stay focused at Cambridge City today (3pm).

Boss Brendon King decided to use Wells behind the back four following his recovery from a broken ankle late last year.

That move corresponded with a run of six successes in as many games for Weymouth and although that form eventually deserted them, they go to Cambridge bidding for a third win in a row.

“Whenever we have a big game against a good side we always seem to raise our game and hopefully we can do that with Cambridge,” said Wells. “But we’ve got to try and stay switched on for the whole game.

“We dominated the first half against Frome but when we switch off we put pressure on ourselves.

“We are still getting an understanding of each other and it’s all about keeping it tight and trying to see out games.

“And we need to take our chances when we get them and not take anything for granted. We must be more clinical in front of goal.

“We played well in our last two games and made lots of chances but didn’t take them.”

He added: “I’m enjoying playing sweeper because with Ed (Palmer) and Sam (Poole) in front of me they can deal with the big strikers and I can drop off and tidy up if I need to.”
