NATHAN Aston and Charlie Kenderdine were both on target as Upwey & Broadwey pulled off a fine 2-1 home victory over Gillingham Town Reserves.

Darren Isaac put the Gills ahead but the hosts went on to be the better side and could have gone on to score more in a one-sided second half.

Winning boss Steve Reynolds said: “Gillingham are second in the table and flying high but we deserved our win, there was no doubt about that.

“The game was a bit scrappy to begin with and they ended up taking the lead on the half-hour through their top-scorer following a well-worked move.

“It was a good goal that we could do nothing about and the pleasing thing for me was the response afterwards.

“We went on to create quite a few opportunities before half-time and then eventually got back level when Nathan scored at the second attempt after playing a good one-two with Sam Nichols.

“That made it 1-1 at the break and then in the second half we came out and played even better.

“In fact, within 10 minutes of the restart we took the lead with Charlie Kenderdine firing home from the edge of the box following good interplay between Pete Bochonko, Ethan Devaney and Jason Pearce.

“We probably should have gone on from there but we couldn’t quite get the third.

“Phil Anderson scored with a diving header but it was disallowed for offside.

“I’m not sure how because Sam pulled the ball back for a start and there was also one of their defenders stood on the post, but there you go.

“Had that been given it would have handed us more of a cushion but to be honest we always looked quite comfortable in the second half with Michael Barton pretty redundant in goal.”

Upwey have now won their last five in the Dorset Senior League and currently sit four points adrift of the top three with two or more games in hand on all the teams above them.

Reynolds added: “There is still a long way to go, particularly with all our games in hand, and the fact we have just beaten second in the league just shows what we are capable of.

“I believe we are more than good enough to get in the top four this season but in order to achieve that we need to keep doing the business.”

Upwey’s next assignment will see them travel to unbeaten table-toppers Mere Town on Saturday.
