Radipole girls sweep to Nash Cup glory
4:40pm Tuesday 12th March 2013 in Sport By David Williams, Sports Reporter
WINNERS: Radipole Primary School girls' team
FAVOURITES Radipole Primary School were the runaway winners of the Girls’ Nash Cup at Redlands with St Augustine’s finishing runners-up.
The team went through the six-a-side tournament unbeaten and did not concede a single goal as they defeated Dorchester Middle (4-0), St Augustine’s (2-0), Conifers A (3-0), Bincombe Valley (5-0), Conifers B (1-0) and St George’s (3-0).
Their formidable strike partnership of Grace and Abi bagged nine and eight goals respectively while Charlotte, daughter of former Terras’ captain Andy Harris, claimed hers with a stylish finish.
Ava, Emily and Holly were all strong defensively which meant Georgie was largely untroubled in goal and all outfield players were rotated during course of the afternoon.
The small schools final was won by Chickerell Primary, who beat Southill 1-0 in the final, while Wyke Regis and Dorchester Middle shared the large schools trophy following a 0-0 draw in the final.
Earlier on, Dorchester had beaten Holy Trinity 5-3 on penalties and Wyke Regis defeated St Osmund’s Middle 2-1 in the semi-finals.
Thanks went to Wey Valley teacher Ben Hunt for helping coordinate the event and his band of Sports Leaders for refereeing the matches which were played with Fairtrade footballs.
The referees decided to present Conifers Primary School with the Fair Play Trophy, donated by Fairtrade, and the Fairtrade balls were given to Wyke Regis, St Osmund’s Middle, Chickerell and Southill.
