Smith-McFarlane fires Weymouth Sports again

ONE-ON-ONE CHANCE: Andy Cleal ONE-ON-ONE CHANCE: Andy Cleal

STOURPAINE 1 WEYMOUTH SPORTS 1

TEEJAY Smith-McFarlane was on target again for Weymouth Sports as they picked up a point at Stourpaine in the Dorset Senior League.

The in-form striker put the visitors ahead early in the second half, only for the Steamers to scramble home an equaliser after a free-kick had caused havoc in the box.

Sports’ joint-boss Chris Hicks told Echosport: “It was a bit disappointing as we didn’t play very well.

“We weren’t anywhere near the standard of the previous week and the fact we had to make four or five changes was not ideal.

“That gave other players a chance to show what they can do but when they don’t take it, it just makes it doubly frustrating.”

He went on to add: “The first half wasn’t too bad and we could have been one or two up by half-time.

“Andy Cleal missed a one-on-one and Teejay was quality again and was unlucky with a couple of half chances which he created for himself.

“We carried on playing okay at the start of the second half and when Teejay headed us in front I thought we might go on and take control. However, rain caused the pitch to deteriorate quite dramatically after that and instead of stamping our authority on the game we ended up getting worse.

“We kept giving the ball away and inviting pressure as well as conceding a few silly free-kicks. Most of them we dealt with but in the end they scrambled one in to equalise.

“It was very annoying but to be honest a point apiece was probably fair in the end, especially with James Parkes having pulled off a great save for us in the second half.

“It was just disappointing we didn’t kick on after going a goal up.”

Sports remain 12th but they have increased the gap over the bottom two to five points.

Hicks said: “A point is a point at the end of the day so we will certainly take it, and with six of our last nine games being at home hopefully we can go on now and build up some momentum.”
