ISLAND BOXERS: Portland members ready for fight action this week
A BUMPER bill of amateur boxing is set for Portland this Saturday with some of the island’s club’s top talent on show.
As many as 14 Portland ABC fighters are scheduled to appear in the club’s first show of 2013 with top junior Kane Hamilton among those taking part.
Unfortunately, two of the club’s best talents, brothers Arran and Ryan Thomas, will not be involved as the Western Counties Finals are being held on the same day in Bristol.
However, head coach Andy Hamil-ton has plenty of action in store, including an appearance from 11-year-old female junior Derry McNulty.
The show at South Portland Conservative Club in Easton Square also features Archie Nash, William and Charlie Barber, Connor Merson, Kyle Baldwin, Tom Jarvis, Dave Whyte, Jean Marc Parry, Claude DeLange, Khaleel Graham, Stephen Brand and Sean Hearnshaw.
“We’re looking at 12-15 bouts on the night including juniors and seniors,” said Hamilton.
“The club has been doing alright though we could probably do with a bit of support from local businesses.
“That’s to help with the day-to-day running of the place, to pay for rent, electricity and water as we are open five nights a week to cater for different standards and ages.
“One of the fighters on the show is Kane Hamilton, who is in the top 10 in England for his age and has been a Western Counties champion two years running.”
Fifteen-year-old Taylor Wakefield has also enjoyed success this year having reached the Class Three Western Counties final – Hami-ton is in Class Two.
Portland ABC held its last show in December and the club is hoping for another good turnout with tickets priced £10 and available on the door.
The action gets underway at 7.45pm.
